Pregnancy Massage

What better a time to allow yourself to be nurtured than during your pregnancy? As your body is adapting to the new life growing within you, health and vitality have never been more important than right now.
A regular soothing massage will have an effect on your physical body and also soothe the mind and emotions. As tight muscles are worked on and tensions melt away, you are giving yourself some well-deserved “time-out” to recharge and revitalize on all levels.

Some benefits of massage during pregnancy are:
  • reduction of fluid retention and swelling
  • relief of muscular tension and joint pain
  • enhanced circulation
  • relief from constipation
  • relief of headaches
  • reduced fatigue
  • increased energy
  • better sleep quality
  • feeling nurtured and cared for

Getting a pregnant woman comfortable on a massage table is not always that simple, especially as the pregnancy progresses. I use a special body cushioning system so that my pregnant clients can lay comfortably supported during this special time – either face down or side lying. This is not a simple table with a hole for the belly, nor a big belly cushion with a hole cut into the centre. This is a specially designed 4 part orthopaedic device that allows you to lie face down for the massage – see the photos at the bottom of this page to see how fantastic the cushioning system supports the pregnant body. There is no strain on any ligaments or a feeling of squashed breasts and belly – seriously comfortable!
NB some clients have felt so comfortable on the body cushions that they have preferred to lay face down during massage for practically the entire pregnancy.

Once totally supported and very, very comfortable, the massage begins covering the back, the back of the legs and the feet.
For the front of the body, the body cushions are repositioned and once again the woman is totally supported and comfortable. The front of the body is massaged and the finale is a lovely facial massage. The treatment is usually 1 hour in duration with some resting time at the end. Only cold-pressed vegetable oil is used for the massage. As I am a fully qualified aromatherapist, I may use essential oils for the massage but only in a very low and safe dilution.

Massage can commence once you have passed your first trimester (12 weeks) and I generally recommend regular massage sessions - fortnightly to monthly up to the last 4 weeks. During the last few weeks of pregnancy clients generally favor more regular sessions - weekly to fortnightly and home visits can be arranged if the client prefers.

I have been working as a massage therapist for 15 years now. In the 90’s I regularly visited the former Royal Woman’s Hospital in Paddington to do voluntary massage in the long-term antenatal ward. I have relocated my clinic from Bondi Junction to Tascott on the Central Coast. I have been working as a therapist full-time since 1992.
